(FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE)
"OPERATION: FAIR GAME STOP" PROTEST MAY 10TH 2008
Worldwide Protest Against Church of Scientology’s Suppression of Free Speech
ADELAIDE, SOUTH AUSTRALIA – May 2, 2008 – On May 10th, thousands of peaceful activists around the world will gather to protest the abusive policies of the Church of Scientology. Protesters in Adelaide will gather in the north-west corner of Victoria Square at 2pm before demonstrating in front of Scientology's South Australian headquarters, on Waymouth Street.
This protest will focus specifically on Scientology's "Fair Game" policy, which states that persons or agencies which Scientology perceives to be 'enemies' may be "deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist… May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed."
Although Scientologists claim that this policy was cancelled in 1968, the wording of the cancellation is clear that "Fair Game" was cancelled in name only. Indeed, there are many examples demonstrating that the practice of Fair Game continues to this day; Scientology continues to harass, stalk, and sue its critics as well as former church members who have left the cult. Famous victims include journalists Paulette Cooper and John Sweeney of the BBC. As recently as April 28, a protester in Boston, USA was charged with 'Criminal Harassment' by Scientology, after he applied for a permit to peacefully picket the cult.
During this event, activists shall distribute informative fliers to interested parties and promote educational websites. Protestors will be available to answer questions from the media and public. A mass mail-out project will also be enacted, where the public will have the opportunity to send a letter to their local MP, in a united act.
For more reading, an information package about Scientology, Anonymous and the May 10 protest has been created for the press and is available for free download on <anonsa.org>
This is the fourth global protest in as many months being organized by internet-based, grassroots activists known collectively as "Anonymous". This international movement includes ex-Scientologists, long-time cult researchers, and concerned citizens from all walks of life. Previous protests drew 9,000 people in over 100 cities worldwide, to demonstrate in front of their local Scientology centres, while Adelaide's demonstrations have drawn over 500 activists in total.
Due to the Church of Scientology's policy of defaming and harassing its critics, those who wish to attend are being urged to remain anonymous and are encouraged to wear masks, scarves or other facial obstructions to protect their identity.
