How do you talk to the public?

I'm knowledgeble on Co$ & a good public speaker. Yet even I don't know where to start when talking to the public on Co$. If not careful YOU can sound like the crazy one:

"Hi, I'm a guy in a superhero mask looking to protect my secret identity from a dangerous, tax-free, Alien cult who abducts people from their families using stress tests and takes their money. No I'm not crazy or paranoid. Would you like a free hug?"

Feel the same? I thought it'd be good to start a thread to share experiences. Please share your advice for the good of 'anonymous'.

e.g. What approach works best for you? What doesn't? What do you say when you hand out a flier?

I'm a bad speaker so I usually just have a specific thing prepared, related to my sign or fliers. I can see how saying everything that you think is wrong all at once is a little off-putting to people. It's good to be specific in what message you want to get out to people. For example, last time I just tried to focus on the Ex-Scientology Kids website and what it was about.

I'd go with first introducing who we are – no names required just say: "Hi there!" to anyone who's interested.

The first thing that needs to be explained is the masks or no matter what we say we will still be "The crazy dude with the V for Vendetta mask on." Just say something along the lines of:

"I'm sure you're wondering why I'm wearing this mask. It's not a joke, it's actually very serious. See that guy over there *point* he's photographing us. Out of respect for our privacy and the privacy of our loved ones we wear these masks. So that should someone take offense to our peaceful protests we cannot be targeted and made an example of."

Then go on to explain WHY we take these precautions and specifically state that everything we do is peaceful and non violent.

Frankly, most people will think you're a religious bigot.  If they say this then just reply with:

"We have no problem with the Religion. People can believe whatever they want to believe – We disagree with the Corporation behind the religion. We even support Freezone who believe in Scientology but refuse to pay the more than $300,000 dollars it costs to learn those teachings."

LEARN WHO FREEZONE ARE – If anyone asks you further questions you should know about them and some back story.

Freezone Info

You will also meet people who don't care either way. These are the hardest to get interested and the easiest to convince. Tell them about Operation Snow White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Snow_White)and how L Ron Hubbard's (The founder of Scientology) wife infiltrated the American IRS with 10 other high ranking members of the Co$. Explain about Narconon – the Co$'s 'rehabilitation center' – (Narconon Info) and how it violates human rights and has been found guilty of practicing illegal medicine and medicine without a license in several countries.

Four great rules for talking to people:

1. Be Polite – They are spending THEIR time listening to you, the least you can do is show some manners.

2. Be Entertaining – If you do not entertain people they WILL zone out and not really listen to what you're saying. Sure you don't have to perform a juggling act, just answer what they ask instead of spewing information out at them and be an all round good bloke.

3. KNOW THE FACTS – There is no point in talking to people if you don't know what you're talking about. Know why we protest and know enough that you can convince anyone that your point of view is at least a valid one. If you don't know an answer to a question, point them in the direction of someone who does.

4. Give them direction – Tell them how to find out more; http://www.enturbulation.org and http://www.anonsa.org are good start points. Make sure that they know about these sites before they leave. The best way to do this is to give out a card to them with those websites so they don't have to remember them. There will be some floating around at most protests – kindly ask an Anon who has some and he/she will happily give you some to hand out.

Follow those and we might just get a few more protesters at the next rally :)

Great post 777 :D

Also, another thing is to say "Hi! I'm anonymous." if they ask for names then they have a "name" to refer to, then that leads into the mask thing and talking about fair game.

after talking about harassment, GIVE EXAMPLES (Paulette Cooper is always great) We are not the Co$. We do not speak in generalities.

and the scilons aren't always photographing us. or I'm not seeing them but they do :P so wear the masks.

Freedom of speech is always the best angle and explaining exactly how dangerous they are.

When talking about Co$ and money,  A metaphor I use is "Imagine paying for each chapter of the bible, bit by bit and then paying your pastor to talk about that and other things afterwards"

that leads into disconnection.

As a post elsewhere said, the Co$ do so much bad stuff, it all just leads into one another. just remember to try and keep it brief if they look like they want to go. and MAKE IT ENTERTAINING.

Nobody likes a lecture.

after giving them an overview, as they said give direction.

If you Don't know everything, refer to the websites, because you should.

As terrible as this stuff is, it makes for fascinating reading.

Applauds Anon777!

Good replies from all!

I agree rule
number 1 is be polite. It can be intimidating on both ends of the mask.
Even waving to the public and saying "hi" or handing out a flier and
saying "good afternoon, hows your weekend?" or "have a good day" not
only is good for Public Relations, but also leaves a better impression
on those not interested. E.g. rather than recalling to a friend " a
weirdo walked past me today" it'll be a "guy in a mask walked past me
today, they were really friendly."  This basic tactic is an easy way
for shy members to build up confidence breaking the ice. Do it again
and again and again! (Especially useful for leaving a positive
impression on those who clearly look like they don't want to be
ranted/preached too. Leave that to the Co$ to annoy them. Just say hi!)

I also think that the small spiel from the WA video was useful.

Mention
that this is THE FOURTH /FIFTH /Xth WORLD WIDE protest, come and join
us! Remember that we are not alone, and point that out! Also point out
that other countries agree! Germany banned Scientology and doesn't
recognise it as a religion. Belgium doesn't recognise it as a religion.
France doesn't recognise it as a religion. Ireland doesn't recognise it
as a religion. Luxemborg doesn't recognise it as a religion, same as
the U.K. Israel… Mexico! Remember them all! Emphasise each country.

Pointing
out that we hold a popular view, are a popular movement and that more
and more people are recoginsing Co$ for what they are (and that were
not spouting extreme or impractical or radical views) is one of the
first steps to convincing a person that our thinking is correct (just
like all the others who agree).

Point out what has been PROVEN.
The leader WAS a SCIFI writer. Mention operation SnowWhite if relevant.
They're have been countless cases of harassment. Mention the Time
Magazine article on The Cult of Greed and Power. It's reputable and
convincing even if they don't read it… =)

I agree.. know the
facts. Actually rehearse! Most ppl just run through the words in their
heads before a speech. Saying them out load once or twice at least
DRASTICALLY improves the results.

Perhaps practice on a trusted friend. Ask them what they thought? Practice answering their questions too.

1) You get better.

2) They get more informed.

3) They get drawn into Anonymous and will know as much as you.

Question to Anon777? What do you recommend to be entertaining?

(e.g. I can't juggle…)

Well I find that the tone you speak in counts the most.

If you appear drole and uninterested in the way you speak, that will reflect on the person you are speaking to.

However, if you are passionate about what you are saying and make the occasional joke; it will turn out fantastic. We're here for Lulz as well as results. Make your points but don't be that formal about it. A protest would suck if it wasn't for the giggles – listening to speeches is the same. Think about the last time you heard someone give a speech and then compare that to the last time you really heard someone entertain you with what they were saying. Which do you remember more of?

I know most of us internet denizens aren't that good at conversing in the dreaded "real life," (if such a thing even exists) but please do know what you're going to say. Every-time you stutter or mumble or stumble over a point it just makes the person you're talking to think you know less than you do. Just be polite, to the point, informative and funny/charming.

If you can't manage any of those or you're not comfortable talking to people or even if you find it harder to get your points across than you thought, just point them in another Anon's direction. I'll be the short one wearing a green corduroy jacket (Sorry folks. I don't own a  dress suit :P) and I'll be happy to talk to everyone and even coach you guys on talking to and getting other people interested, if you want.

Thats particularly true about stuttering etc. Prehaps a good idea is for new members to focus on a few good points you want to cover and know them well. There generally isn't enough time on a march to go into overkill detail unless you get the audience.

I think it would be really good (particularly with your help anon777) to develop this post further. Guidelines / tips for dealing with the public have never (to my knowledge been developed..)

Practice is good too – try talking to your mum about it. approach a trusted friend. or try and explain it to someone down at the pub. u will be amazed wot u do and don't know, once u try and explain it someone else (espeically when u have to explain it to total net-n00bs)

This gives u loads of practice with real ppl 2, real questions and thinking on yr feet. try to practice on a diverse range of ppl. u will give a way better answer to a question you've heard before, then you will if u r thinking on your feet.

There was an idea put forward a little while back for 'Cheat Sheets' or prompt-card type things. For Operation Sea ARRRG we might just need a few quick summary dot points to refer to, when we get questioned. Doesn't have to be an essay, just a few dot points that will jog your memory about the issues you want to get across.

Now is as good a time as any to get started?

FREE YOUR MIND …and the rest will follow

Thanks Thetan,

I'll give it my best shot…

(Please, for the love of Xenu, read this - Sea Org. It will save you so much time and I've edited out some of the 'wikiFacts' so it should be as accurate as possible.

Here are a few key points to hit about 'Sea Arghh:'

1. Life time(s) service –  Those who join Sea Org are required to provide 1,000,000,000 years of service to the Org, while this may sound ludicrous to us, people who believe in Scientology take this very seriously – They believe your 'Thetan' lives forever (A Thetan is basically a soul – but made of monies, tasty tasty monies *lulz*). Should they decide that they want out of Sea Org then they become targets of Sea Org and greater Scientology – Should they ever reveal anything about the teachings of Scientology they learned while in the Org then they will become a top priority for all Scilons to hit with fair game. There are many documented cases of this – LEARN THEM! (

2. Abortion – Female members of Sea Org are forced (Stress the word forced, they do not have any choice in the matter) to have abortions should they become pregnant. These are often performed by people who do not have a medical license or the qualifications to perform such a procedure and are very dangerous and often lead to complications later. (This works great with Women and devout Christians – just don't charge head first into this topic, it can be a personal subject. Talk about a few other things first)

3. RPA -  Learn it and love it, this is the best ammunition you're ever gonna get against Scientology. Anyone who claims that Scientology isn't a cult only needs to read that to realize that it is – The RPA is a brainwashing training program originally conceptualized by Hubbard as a way to turn certain disloyal or lazy members of the Sea Org into productive crew members. Being a member of Sea Org is slavery… the RPF is something far worse.

4. Pay – In return for their loyal slave-like services they receive a luxurious  closet (around 7ft by 5ft in size) onboard the ship or base they are currently serving at and the grand sum of $24 USD. That is lower than the base wage in EVERY WESTERN COUNTRY. Cult? I think so.

5. Hubbard and his 'great escape.' – Hubbard fled America aboard the flag ship of Sea Org 'Freewinds.' He did so to avoid prosecution by several governments for fraud and practicing medicine without a license. Is that the action of a religious leader or a criminal? You decide.

Remember kiddies, if people aren't asking you about this stuff then feel free to go ask if they'd like to know more. I did not see enough Anons talking to the people! Hell, Mormons do it, why can't we :P
